Palm Sunday
“Hail, King of the Jews”
Today, as we celebrate Palm Sunday, we begin Holy Week.
Holy Week is the most sacred time of the year for Christians, for during this week we celebrate the most important events of our faith: Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
In honor of this, our Marian image this week is of Mary holding her Son after he has been taken down from the Cross. It is called the Pieta. The word Pieta is an Italian word meaning Pity or Compassion.
This image was painted by William-Adolphe Bouguereau in the year 1876. I really love this picture. The tender and yet heart-wrenching sorrow of Mary as she holds the dead body of her Son is so beautifully portrayed. And the angels themselves surround them in sorrow as they mourn their Lord.
You are in my daily prayers.
God bless you,
Fr. VanDenBroeke
